On the Canvey Island shoreline revetment project, principal contractor Balfour Beatty replaced site diesel with green hydrogen over a four-week trial. Protium supplied the hydrogen, delivered with Hydrologiq, Sunbelt Rentals UK & Ireland and the Environment Agency, proving diesel-free power on a live civils site.
We supplied the green hydrogen for a proof-of-concept trial with Komatsu at their UK site in Birtley. The setup used Elemental Energy's H2IPO microgrid to charge Komatsu's battery-electric PC210LCE excavator off-grid, with our green hydrogen behind it. It showed how a renewable microgrid can charge heavy electric plant on site, without the diesel that usually powers off-grid charging, and fits the kind of Hydrogen-as a Service supply we offer for construction.
