When ambition needs infrastructure 

Panasonic Manufacturing UK approached this project with a definitive ambition. As part of its global RE100 commitment, the Cardiff site needed to integrate green hydrogen into its energy ecosystem. By combining solar power, battery storage, and hydrogen fuel cells, the objective was to create a self-contained renewable microgrid. This would significantly reduce the site’s reliance on grid supply as part of Panasonic’s broader corporate decarbonisation strategy. 

It is the kind of forward-thinking brief that reflects exactly where serious industrial decarbonisation is heading.  

Having a clear vision for how green hydrogen should function on-site is merely the starting point. Moving from a conceptual layout to an operational system that is fully installed, commissioned, and safely delivering gas requires a highly specialised skill set—one that rarely exists within internal engineering teams. What Protium was asked to deliver 

Protium’s involvement in this project extended well beyond the scope of industrial hydrogen supply. The mandate was to design, install, and commission the complete hydrogen infrastructure required to deliver gas to Panasonic’s fuel cell system. Protium delivered the hydrogen system design through to operation. 

In practice, the deployment required a comprehensive engineering footprint: 

  • Tube trailer bays and decanting equipment  
  • High-pressure pipework
  • A bespoke Hydrogen Pressure Let-Down Station (PLS), including its advanced control system 

The core engineering challenge was to accept tube trailer deliveries of high-pressure hydrogen and safely reduce it to the low pressures required by Panasonic’s HX fuel cells. Furthermore, the system had to operate autonomously whenever a tube trailer was connected. Achieving this level of reliability, safety, and precision is a complex integration task that demands deep hydrogen know-how. 

Alongside the site infrastructure, Protium also procured the required tube trailers to ensure uninterrupted delivery. A hydrogen supply agreement alongside an ongoing Operations and Maintenance (O&M) agreement provides the framework for the hydrogen operation. 

The 21 Panasonic HX fuel cell units—each generating 5kW for a combined capacity of 105kW—are Panasonic’s proprietary technology. Protium’s critical contribution was delivering the hydrogen infrastructure layer, making sure the system safely delivers hydrogen to the exact specification the fuel cells require.

Why the project sequence is non-negotiable 

One of the key factors distinguishing an experienced hydrogen infrastructure specialist from teams newer to the sector is a strict adherence to correct project sequencing. Protium designed the system first, installed it second, and commissioned it third. Only when the commissioning process was fully verified did green hydrogen supply to the site begin. This is not a matter of procedural preference; it is the only responsible way to bring a high-pressure gas asset into service.

At every stage, preceding work must be completed and independently validated before the next phase commences. Pressure testing, leak verification, safety instrumented system validation, and integration with the site’s overarching control infrastructure are all load-bearing milestones. Compressing or skipping any of these steps introduces operational risks that are incredibly difficult to remedy later. 

Protium’s technical team has lived through this rigorous process on its own commercial production assets, most notably during the deployment of Pioneer 2. This asset portfolio required the exact same disciplined, stage-by-stage approach to achieve safe, reliable operation. This accumulated operational experience does not sit forgotten in a manual; it comes from practical execution, and it transfers directly to how we de-risk our customers’ projects.

The infrastructure challenge most manufacturers underestimate 

Industrial hydrogen projects present a hidden challenge. While the hardware itself—fuel cells, pressure vessels, regulators, and manifolds—is relatively accessible thanks to a maturing supply chain, procurement is not the biggest hurdle. 

The True Challenge: What requires specialist expertise is  specifying, designing, and integrating a system that meets the most rigorous safety standards while being efficient and fit for purpose. Hydrogen is in some respects a complex molecule. Its flammability range is wider than most industrial gases, it can permeate standard seals, and the high pressures involved exceed that of most gases in use by manufacturers. Experience, however, makes it safe and manageable to have on site. Safety is central to Protium’s design approach and carries through to the operational philosophy we deploy. This experience enables even new users of hydrogen to have safe, operable systems on site. 

For Protium, safety considerations shape component selection, pipework routing, control system architecture, and hazardous area classifications long before hardware arrives on site. 

The Pressure Let-Down Station at the heart of the Panasonic system reflects this philosophy. It was engineered to operate autonomously, managing the interface between high-pressure supply and low-pressure point of use without manual intervention. It is designed to be inherently safe and operate as part of a fully integrated energy system.

Moving beyond proof of concept 

This system can provide Panasonic’s factory its full energy requirement on an ongoing basis: this is not a short-term demonstration or an isolated proof of concept. It is a live, working industrial site with integrated hydrogen infrastructure delivering microgrid power.
