Beyond the Pipeline: Protium & Rux Energy to Expand Green Hydrogen Globally
Posted: October 14, 2026
Combining Protium’s green hydrogen production with Rux Energy’s MOF storage to deliver zero-emission fuel across UK and global markets.
Protium, one of the UK’s leading green hydrogen companies, and Rux Energy UK, a global advanced hydrogen storage technology group, have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to collaborate on the production, storage, transport and supply of hydrogen.
The agreement builds on the companies’ existing work together in the UK. Protium, which already operates green hydrogen production facilities in South Wales and the South Coast, will produce and supply green hydrogen, while Rux Energy will provide storage and logistics using its patented metal-organic framework (MOF) technology.
The partners also aim to take this model beyond the UK, with a particular focus on the Asia Pacific region, where Rux Energy is planning trials in Australia and Singapore.
Rux Energy has set a target to reduce the cost of hydrogen bulk storage and distribution to US$1/kg by 2030. The company is running first-of-a-kind trials in the UK, the Netherlands, Singapore and Australia.
Over the three-year term of the MoU, the companies intend to:
develop a delivered hydrogen commercial model for end users;
jointly identify and pursue new opportunities in the UK and priority international markets, including the Asia Pacific region;
map the technical, safety and certification requirements for Rux Energy storage systems in each priority territory;
explore joint funding for UK and international projects; and
work towards a logistics services agreement.
The collaboration targets supporting customers in hard-to-abate sectors, looking to displace diesel and other fossil fuels, to decarbonise sectors such as energy-intensive manufacturers, construction sites, data centres, off-grid energy and heavy transport, particularly those that cannot be reached by electricity grids or hydrogen pipelines.
Christopher Jackson, CEO & Founder, Protiumsaid: “Making green hydrogen is only half the job. If it can’t reach the customer, it can’t replace diesel. Rux Energy gives us a smart, flexible way to get hydrogen to the sites that need it most, the ones no electricity grid or hydrogen pipeline will ever reach. That’s how we move from pilots to real displacement of fossil fuels, in the UK and beyond.”
RuxEnergy CEO, Dr Jehan Kangasaid: Protium is an ideal hydrogen supply partner as we expand our UK and international footprint. Together we can show how inherently safe and energy efficient storage and logistics can radically lower the cost of delivered hydrogen unlocking decarbonisation for the world’s hardest-to-abate sectors.”
ABOUT PROTIUM
Protium is one of the UK’s leading green hydrogen companies. We make green hydrogen simple for customers by providing end-to-end solutions that help businesses decarbonise reliably, affordably, and safely, replacing fossil fuels across various sectors, including construction, manufacturing, industrial, and transport.
By pioneering the scale-up and adoption of green hydrogen and its derivatives in the UK, Protium delivers practical hydrogen solutions that work today. Our capabilities span production, distribution, and on-site deployment, supported by expert guidance from technical services to commercial development to enable a confident transition to a cleaner, more resilient energy future.
Protium has scaled its national portfolio to operate an interconnected network consisting of three production sites and four distribution hubs. This strategic operational footprint includes the flagship Pioneer 2 facility in Wales, the South Coast Hydrogen hub in Dorset, a significant project acquisition pipeline in Scotland, and major hub projects in South Teesside.
Rux Energy is a deep tech scaleup commercialising advanced nanoporous MOF materials for bulk hydrogen storage for distribution & transport, ships, trucks, trains, and planes.
Rux Energy’s patented MOFs or Metal-Organic Frameworks act like sponges in tanks to improve gas storage densities, lowering pressures and moderating temperatures to improve the safety, energy efficiency and cost of gas storage and transport.
Rux Energy’s breakthrough innovations deliver near-liquid densities with 10x improved energy efficiencies, and significant improvements in safety systemwide, all at low pressures of 20-30 bar and is poised to commence trials in the UK, Netherlands, Singapore and Australia.
